Imagine this: You’re standing in front of the Staples Center in downtown LA. The sights, sounds and smells of the city surround you, but a gathered crowd draws your attention. You make your way over to the giant LED screen where a man and woman from the crowd are performing silly dance moves with one another. You look down from the screen to check out the live action and are surprised to find the man dancing alone — the woman isn’t there.

Turns out she’s actually Lady Luck, brought to life by the California Lotteryand agency David & Goliath in a first-of-its-kind, live, augmented reality experience. Lady Luck appeared in front of a crowd of unsuspecting Californians to offer a select few a shot at a million dollars with the California Black Exclusive Scratchers®.

Never used before, this level of interactive technology required an actress, a green-screen and a live feed from the plaza to ensure a seamless experience for onlookers. With the help of visual effects company V Squared Labs, who created a custom software platform to react to real-time interactions and mishaps, the CA Lottery pulled off this massive stunt. Audience members could even high five their virtual lucky lady.

Augmented reality is a live view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input (video in this case). Lady Luck appeared only on screen as she interacted with the enthusiastic audience, pulling in random members for dancing and other (embarrassing) stunts. After the dancing was done, the selected audience members received a free California Black Exclusive Scratcher as a reward.

With its Lady Luck Live stunt, the CA Lottery was able to remind Californians that no matter where you are, “Luck Will Find You.”
